This set of spinning tops was one of my first projects on the wood lathe. The final set ended up taking shape as an exploration of the forms enabled through the turning process.
The tops started out as a 3 x 3 x 12" walnut blank. This blank was rough shaped before being cut into smaller portions that would be inserted into a chuck.
The final shaping process is pictured above. Once shaped and sanded, the top was cut off of the remaining material. The tops were finished with a coat of mineral oil.
